Skills and Competencies

What are Skills and Competencies and What Are The Differences?

"Skills” and “Competencies” are two terms you’ll come across regularly

Skills are the Specific Learned Abilities that you need to perform a given job well. You may hear the terms, “soft” or “hard” skills.

Skills are the “What” - What Skills are required to complete a job?

“Hard Skills” - a technical skill that a professional may demonstrate through their specific qualifications and professional experience eg. Computer Programming; being able to speak a foreign language; Accountancy qualifications

“Soft Skills” - a non-technical skill e.g Time Management or Communication; sometimes also known as employability skills or transferable skills.

Competencies are the person's knowledge and behaviours that lead them to be successful in a job.

Competencies are the “How” - How does an individual do their job?
